We say it often at Stone House: the most memorable spaces are the ones where beauty and real life coexist effortlessly. That same philosophy is true even when it comes to the simplest things in life, like lightbulbs. You can spend months sourcing the perfect antique brass sconce or that one-of-a-kind chandelier, but if the bulb inside it is wrong, the whole room falls flat. Great lighting is the difference between a space that photographs well and a space that feels good to live in, day in and day out.

The Two Lighting 101 Numbers That Matter: Kelvin and Lumens

Kelvin: The Color of Your Light

Kelvin (K) measures the color temperature of a bulb. Think warm vs. cool. The Kelvin scale runs from 2000K to 5000K.

• 2000-2700K: Warm, golden, intimate. Think candlelight and Edison bulbs. Beautiful for dining rooms, bedrooms, and anywhere you want to feel like you’re unwinding.
• 2700-3000K: Our sweet spot at Stone House. Warm white without being yellow. Clean without being cold. This range plays beautifully with most paint colors, and transitions gracefully from daytime to evening.
• 3000-4000K: Bright and crisp. A reasonable choice for task-heavy spaces like a home office or a workshop but try to stray away from this range when choosing lighting for living areas.
• 4000K & above: Hospital lighting. Need we say more? Unless you’re performing surgery on your kitchen island, you can stay away from 4000K and above.

Stone House Tip: At Stone House, we try to stay consistent in our Kelvin temperature throughout a space. Mixing a 2700K lamp with a 4000K overhead light in the same room creates a visual disconnect that’s hard to name but impossible to ignore. When in doubt, 2700-3000K is universally flattering.

Lumens: The Brightness of Your Light

Forget watts. Watts measure energy consumption, not light output—and since nearly every bulb on the market today has converted to LED, watts have largely become a meaningless number. The number you want is lumens, which tells you how much actual light a bulb produces.

More lumens = more brightness.

• 250-450 lumens: Soft, accent-level light. Perfect for a lamp on a sideboard, a picture light over a piece of art, or a sconce that’s more decorative than functional.
• 650-800 lumens: This is your workhorse range. Great for table lamps, pendants, and recessed lights. Bright enough to be useful, warm enough to be cozy.
• 1000+ lumens: High-output task lighting. Under-cabinet kitchen lights, reading lamps, and utility spaces.

Stone House Tip: You can—and should—layer your lumens. A room lit entirely by one overhead fixture at 1600 lumens will feel flat and harsh, no matter how stunning that fixture is. But the same room with a 650-lumen overhead + a pair of 450-lumen table lamps + a 250-lumen accent on a bookshelf? That’s a room that has depth, and feels considered and lived in.
