Add a pop of color to your home with an accent wall. Accent walls are a popular choice because they’re easy to complete, and they leave a lasting impact on the space they’re used in. If you’re thinking about turning a plain wall into an accent wall, our colorful collection of DIY projects can help you get started.

How to Paint an Accent Wall

So what exactly is an accent wall?

It is one wall in a room which differs in style from the rest. It typically has a bold color, patterned paint, or wallpaper to stand out from the rest of the room. Some walls become a focal point by default because they a fireplace, or another naturally dominant feature. Creating your own accent wall is pretty simple—getting started is the hardest part.

Here are a few rules to consider when painting an accent wall in your home.

Balance

Accent walls are bold moves, but that doesn’t mean your entire style needs to be. We recommend the remaining walls be kept neutral. The accent color(s) should harmonize with similar cool or warm tones on the surrounding walls.

Play off the wall color with other accessories in your space, such as throw pillows, blankets, artwork, and even throw rugs. This is an easy way to invite harmony into the room so the accent wall doesn’t look too out of place.

Maximize a Focal Point Feature

When choosing where to put your accent wall, it makes sense to take the natural focal point in a room and exaggerate it. Picking another wall sets up an uncomfortable competition, and you’re left wondering what you should be looking at—the television or the decorative paint treatment.

Here are some examples where this focal point could be:

  1. Living room – This could be the fireplace or the TV.
  2. Bedroom – Wall around the headboard
  3. Kitchen – Range or cooktop.
