Making a bed seems simple—until you actually have to do it. Our tried-and-true method for how to make a bed guarantees a beautiful bed that looks like it was done by an interior designer. These steps work for any mattress size, whether you’re looking to learn how to make a king-size bed or a twin.

How to Make Your Bed Like an Interior Stylist

Step 1: Sheets

The first layer of the bed is the most important layer, and that’s a perfect set of sheets. You don’t have to buy the most expensive set of sheets to make your bed look luxurious. We recommend starting with a white base. That means getting a matching set of white sheets and pillowcases.

Lay the fitted sheet on your bed, aligning the corners of the sheet with the corners of the bed. Starting in one corner, tuck the bedsheet under the mattress. Move diagonally to the next corner and repeat tucking in the sheet. Repeat for the remaining two corners. Smooth out any gaps or bunches, and make sure the fitted sheet is pulled taut over the mattress. Then lay the flat sheet over the bed so it hangs evenly on both sides of the bed. Lay it facedown so the decorative or patterned front will show when you fold it back.

Step 2: Layer a Coverlet

Spread the coverlet or blanket across the entire bed. Then pull down the coverlet and top sheet about a pillow’s width from the top of the bed. This blanket can be a heavier white bedspread in a textured pattern. Make sure, however, that the white of your coverlet matches the white of your sheets.

Step 3: Spread Out the Duvet

Depending on your personal preference, you’ll finish making your bed with a comforter, duvet, quilt, or other top bed covering. This is where you can bring in your room’s color scheme and your own personal flair.

Step 4: Add Decorative Pillows

Start with the standard pillow sets for beds. For a king or queen mattress, use four pillows. Add pillow shams to the back two pillows; the other two pillows should be purchased with your comfort and sleeping style in mind. Finally, add accent pillows in both solids and patterns for a pop of personality. We recommend that you don’t go overboard with pillows. The quickest way to make a bed look messy is adding one too many pillows. Stick with one or two throws that maintain the color scheme.

With these interior designer approved tips, your bed will look pulled together with minimal effort every single day!
