Designing a kid’s room where they can play and grow in, can have its own set of challenges. On one hand, you want to create a fun, imaginative space that sparks their curiosity, but on the other, you want to create a beautiful functional space that will last a long time.
When it comes to creating a space for your little ones, we always want to make choices that reflect their personalities and have a balance of practicality and fun.
Here are seven of our favorite tips for designing kids’ rooms:
1. Create A Space They Can Grow Up In
Even though you may see an incredibly cool playful little girl and boy rooms on Pinterest that you want to try out for your little ones, we recommend you take a step back and stop. Here’s why… You will be redoing and redesigning your kid’s room all the way up until they are 18. Instead, we recommend investing in versatile, timeless pieces that can grow with your kids, so you can avoid having to re-do everything.

2. Add Color
You kid may want to paint their room a vibrant shade of purple or blue, BUT there are much better ways to incorporate colors that are far less permanent and that can grow with them as they get older.
For instance, we love using pillows, throws, or even wallpaper to add a pop of color and bring some personality into the space. This will also allow you to easily change the look and style of your space without having to paint!
3. Incorporate Pattern
We love incorporating patterns into our designs because they add dimension, personality, and interest to a space. Mixing and matching patterns is a perfect way to add playfulness to your kid’s bedroom decor. Easy ways to do this are with wallpaper, duvet covers, artwork, and decor.

4. Add Bold Artwork
Artwork is an easy way to incorporate a child’s personality into the space, while also giving them something that builds imagination or inspires them. Inspirational quotes, animals, and florals, are simple and easy ways to do this!
5. Choose Easy to Clean Materials
When it comes to designing your kid’s room, make sure you are using performance fabrics aka easy-to-clean materials! Kids can be messy and accidents are inevitable, so choosing fabric and furniture that can stand the test of time is a must.
6. Use decorative storage
If you’re a parent, you know toys can easily take over a house. This means incorporating storage is extremely important. Having enough storage will not only keep your room tidy, but it will also keep the dreaded clutter out of sight.
You can get creative when adding storage to your room. For instance you can use bookshelves with differing shapes or places to add in a woven basket. You could also use shelving and highlight your child’s favorite books or toys.
7. Make Space For Play
Having your kids use their imaginations is pivotal to their development, so making the most of your space is a necessity. You can create spaces inside the room that is for play. In this section of the room, there would-be toys and different games. You can also add wallpaper and different colors and designs to stimulate their minds and create more engagement.
